چکیده

The aim of the present work is to investigate role intense Reynolds shear-stress events in generation secondary flow turbulent ducts. We consider connected regions where product instantaneous fluctuations two velocity components higher than a threshold based on long-time turbulence statistics, spirit three-dimensional quadrant analysis proposed by Lozano-Durán et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 694, 2012, pp. 100–130). examine both geometrical properties these structures and their contribution mean in-plane components, we perfom comparison with channel at similar number. certain quantity defined as ensemble average over detected coherent structures, weighted own occupied volume fraction. In core region duct, wall-normal component very good agreement that channel, despite presence former. Additionally, shapes objects do not differ significantly flows. corner proximity walls affects vertical velocity. However, such less relevant complementary portion included objects. Our results show strong are affected but, important dynamics wall-bounded flows, relatively low, corner.

A Review of Reynolds Stress Models for Turbulent Shear Flows

A detailed review of recent developments in Reynolds stress modeling for incompressible turbulent shear ows is provided. The mathematical foundations of both two-equation models and full second-order closures are explored in depth. It is shown how these models can be systematically derived for two-dimensional mean turbulent ows that are close to equilibrium. A variety of examples are provided t...

Reynolds stress and the physics of turbulent momentum transport

The nature of the momentum transport processes responsible for the Reynolds shear stress is investigated using several ensembles of fluid particle paths obtained from a direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow. It is found that the Reynolds stress can be viewed as arising from two fundamentally different mechanisms. The more significant entails transport in the manner described by ...

Noise generation by turbulent flow in ducts

The aim of this work is to estimate the sound power generated by a turbulent flow in a duct from the knowledge of mean quantities which can be computed with a K-e turbulence model when only the plane wave can propagate, i.e., when the characteristic frequency of the turbulence is low. It does turn out to be possible for the simplest configuration of a duct free of internal obstruction. The resu...

Reynolds number effects in stratified turbulent wakes

We report large-eddy simulations of the turbulent wake of a towed-sphere of diameter D at speed U in a linearly stratified Boussinesq fluid with buoyancy frequency N . These simulations are performed using a spectral-multidomain-penalty-method-based incompressible Navier-Stokes solver for Re ≡ UD/ν ∈ {5 × 10, 10, 4 × 10} and Fr ≡ 2U/(ND) ∈ {4, 16, 64}. Increasingly richer turbulent fine structu...

Turbulent Pulsating Flow through Circular Ducts

In the present paper, a numerical method has been demonstrated which works on an overall NewtonRaphson type algorithm and is capable of solving the “inverse” problem for turbulent, fullydeveloped, pulsating pipe flows, where the mass flow rate, rather than the pressure gradient is prescribed as a periodic function of time. The momentum equation, governing the transient, fullydeveloped pulsating...
